As week approach Spring, the Shuksan PE classes hope to get outside. Some upcoming events we have in PE are the annual Shuksan Obstacle Relay, the track and field unit (depending on the progress of tearing out the fields for the new Shuksan School), and Fitness Testing.

The students will participate in the Spring fitness testing at the end of May. Students will be measured for fitness in the areas of cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, and flexibility. Please help your child prepare and stay active by riding bikes, going hiking, or going to pool for a swim. Students should be involved in cardiovascular exercise at least 5 times a week for about 30 minutes continuously. This means exercise that causes the heart rate to increase and breathing to be challenged. This is something the family can do together.
The middle school challenge run/walk is on June 7 at Whatcom Falls Park. Encourage students to participate. This is a fun, healthy tradition in the middle schools.

Stay Active! Make Healthy Food Choices! Practice Healthy Habits!

Uniform Policy

Beginning in September 2007, Shuksan Middle School will require PE uniforms. Students will be required to purchase a Shuksan PE t-shirt the first week of school. The shirt will cost $4.25. Students will write their name on the shirt and be responsible for wearing the shirt to PE class everyday. If a shirt is lost or damaged, the student will be required to purchase a new Shuksan PE shirt. Students will be required to purchase shorts or sweatpants on their own. The shorts and sweats must be solid colored (no writing, a stripe is fine), with no pockets. The shorts must be soccer or basketball shorts that are mid-thigh in length and must be worn at the waist. Absolutely no cut-offs, cargo pants, jeans, or shorts above mid-thigh may be worn. Students may wear sweatshirts, but it must be solid color and without writing.

If a student comes without proper PE clothes, the student will check out a PE t-shirt to wear for the class period only. If this happens frequently, the parents will be notified and a new Shuksan PE shirt and shorts may need to be purchased.
Scholarships will be available for families who cannot afford the t-shirt.

One goal of Physical Education is to teach students the importance of being physically active, enjoying physical activity, and learning skills that will help them safely engage in a variety of activities. In order to meet these goals students need to be prepared and present for full participation in class. As a Physical Education staff, our goal is to provide a safe and positive learning environment for the students. However, this requires students to take responsibility and engage in their own learning.

Purpose: To work cooperatively with peers and teachers to improve physical fitness and develop healthy lifestyle habits.

Content Area Standards to be met:
1) Develops health and fitness plan, and maintains/progresses personal health and fitness levels
2) Safely and appropriately participates in developmentally appropriate physical and health activities
3) Demonstrates healthy fitness levels in cardiovascular strength, muscle strength, and flexibility
4) Demonstrates knowledge and progress of fundamental and complex skills, rules, and strategies in activities taught
5) Uses communication skills/strategies to interact and work effectively with others

Standard-based scoring or grading:
Students will be assessed throughout the trimester in each of the five standards listed above.
Students will receive a score of 1-4 on each assessment. The scores or numbers reflect whether the student has met standard or not. This maybe different from your students’ other classes system of scoring.
In order to give your student a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F), the score will earn a letter grade that reflects whether the student has met standard or not. For example, if your child earns a 3 (which means the student met standard), a student earns a 75%, which in PE equals a letter grade B.
This form of scoring will help you and your child know what exactly he or she needs to do to improve in order to meet grade level standards. See the rest of the parent packet and Shuksan PE website for more information.

Classroom Rules:
Follow all Shuksan School Rules
2. Students behave in a safe and respectful manner that allows peers to learn and the teacher to teach.
Students should be on time, dressed in appropriate gym uniform and seated in their squad line at the appropriate time.

Discipline: Progressive consequences for inappropriate behavior are redirection, classroom timeout, infraction, parent call, and administrative notification. When a student acts in an unsafe manner and/or prohibits the continuation of the learning process they may be sent to the office for administrative actions.

Student Expectations: Every student is expected to dress down in the PE uniform, participate, and work cooperatively with the teacher and peers. If a student has an excused absence on a PE day or comes to school with a parent note explaining an injury or illness (students will not be able to call home, the excuse must be pre-arranged), the student is responsible for making up that missed day. The students must complete a half-hour of physical activity and have a parent/guardian or coach sign the PE make-up form in order to receive the five daily points. It is the student’s responsibility to get the make-up form from his/her PE teacher or on his/her PE teacher’s website and return it to his/her PE teacher. If a student has more than 5 absences that are not made-up in a semester, if will be difficult for the student to earn a score higher than a 2 in the areas of participation and skill development.
**Unexcused (without parent note) non-suits may not be made-up!
**Continual noncompliance with the uniform policy may result in infractions or office referrals and a lower grade.

Supplies: Each student change into a Shuksan PE t-shirt, lace-up athletic shoes, solid colored athletic shorts and/or sweats (no writing). Appropriate PE attire consists of a Shuksan PE t-shirt covering the stomach at all times during activities, shorts/pants pulled up to waist level, and shorts reaching mid-thigh length. No jeans, cut-offs, spaghetti string tank tops, or cargo style shorts/pants. Students need to provide their own combination lock (no key locks) and each student will be assigned a PE locker to use.

Health

Physical Education and Health are integrated at Shuksan Middle School in order for students to learn that health and fitness must accompany each other to truly develop healthy lifestyle habits.

Goal of PE and Health is to teach students:

the importance of being physically active

lifelong healthy habits

enjoy physical activity

skills that will help them safely engage in a variety of activities

Students will participate in hands-on and movement activities that teach nutrition, lifelong fitness, and healthy habits. Students will also set and monitor fitness and healthy lifestyle goals. Students may keep a health journal that monitors progress, daily exercise, eating, television/computer use, emotional stress, sleep, and other activities related to healthy living. Please ask your student to share his or her goals with you.

Fitness Testing

Each trimester, every student at Shuksan Middle School participates in Fitness Testing. The six categories are the Pacer Test, Sit-up test, Push-up Test, Sit and Reach, Vertical Jump, and the Mile. At Shuksan, we emphasize healthy fitness levels that students can feel good about and learn to maintain. Below is a chart that lists the healthy zones for each test. When a Shuksan Student reaches the healthy zone in all testing areas the student becomes part of the STAR HEALTHY ZONE. The student receives a star with his or her name that is displayed on the wall with the other students in this STAR ZONE. Look below to see where you are at!
