Algebra

Algebra Policies and Practices

Summary of Course

Algebra is the study of simplifying and evaluating expressions, solving linear equations, problem solving and graphing on the Cartesian coordinate plane. Students will be using TI-83 graphing calculators to help with the visualization process of certain algebraic concepts. Emphasis is placed on the ability to understand and solve real world applications along with explaining and supporting solutions both verbally and in writing.

Students will work both in collaborative groups and individually. Learning will be facilitated through direct instruction, group discussion, and project based activities to explore mathematical applications. Expectations are high regarding the quality of student work.

Assessments, including tests, quizzes, experiments, and projects, are weighted more heavily (65%) than homework. Homework is checked for completion and basic understanding and is encouraged to help students practice new concepts learned in class. Daily work is weighted at 35%. Grades will be posted on Zangle, the district’s computerized grading program. Zangle allows parents and/or guardians to access their child’s progress online at any time. Check the appropriate box on the attached signature page or call the counseling office (676-6454) for more information.

Redoing Assessments

At teacher discretion, assessments may be redone if the student did not completely master the intended content or skills and the student has demonstrated sincere effort to prepare for the assessment the first time it was given. Redoing assessments is a privilege, not something to be taken for granted. Students must redo assessments within one week of their return; otherwise the original grade stands. An average of the two assessment scores will be recorded. Students must redo assessments on their own time, not during class time. In order to redo any test, students must set up an appointment with me to review the original test. I am available to work with students most Mondays after school from 3:00 until 4:00, other days by appointment, and before school starting at 7:45. Please note that students are not allowed in the building before 8:00. Therefore, morning meeting times will require prior planning and approval.

Makeup Work

One of the ways to encourage your student’s success is to ensure his/her attendance in school. The work we do each day in class is important and will be easier to understand if your child is present and participating in the discussion and activities. In addition, minimizing absences lessens the pressure on the student of trying to catch up after being away. However, if your child does need to miss school, you may contact the attendance office for assignment requests. You may also contact me directly using the above contact information.
Daily assignments will be kept in a binder in the classroom on the assignment table. Students are encouraged to check that log to record missing assignments. Students will find any handouts necessary for the assignment(s) in their classroom crate located below the front assignment table.
Students are allowed the two days for every day absent to make up the work, unless a note is received from parents requesting more time.

Homework

Please be aware that when students do have homework, we will have prepared thoroughly in class. They will have had ample opportunities to ask questions or get help, and the homework will only review concepts we have already gone over in class. Students will never be asked to learn something new for a homework assignment.

Student Papers

Papers with no names are put into a separate tray on the assignment table. A student may check the tray and upon finding his or her work, write his or her name on it and resubmit the assignment. The tray is emptied into the recycling bin every few weeks.
Students will be asked to keep their daily work in their math binders. I will keep all assessment materials in a portfolio-type file in the classroom. Please feel free to stop by and view your child’s portfolio at any point in the year, or send in a note and I’ll send it home for your review.

Extra Supplies

Please keep your eyes and ears open for extra paper, pens, pencils, markers, erasers, tape, scissors, hole punches, staplers, and tissues! We maintain an in-class supply center, which frequently needs replenishing. Any donations are welcome and appreciated.

I am happy to be working with you this year.
